Getting To Know Our Faculty Team

A team that co-learns with their Learners

The Director of Academic Development and Faculty Heads (Program Directors) come with a wealth of experience in their respective fields and share a passion to prepare our Learners for an unknown, ambiguous, rapidly changing and uncertain future.

Team members at the Academy are committed to upholding the values of respect, humility, courtesy, helpfulness, sincerity, teamwork and integrity to bring about a soaring learning experience for our Learners where the moment of learning becomes a moment of DELIGHT.

Ms. Tay Beng Koon

Director of Academic Development

Ms. Tay Beng Koon holds a BA from National University of Singapore and a Diploma in Training and Development from Singapore Institute of Management. She is a Certified Facilitator for various DDI Programs and Master Trainer for Shangri-La's Trainer Skills.

Beng Koon has been actively involved in people development activities for about 18 years as a Training Manager, Director of Human Resources and subsequently Group Director of Human Resources, of which the last eight years were in China, having served in both Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts and other major international and local Hotel Groups.

As a Productivity Activist, she has been selected to represent Singapore to both Japan and China in international productivity activities and had accumulated six years of experience in managing company-wide total quality management programs.

Mr. Martin De Castro

Program Director, F&B Service Operation

Mr. Martin De Castro holds a degree in Business Management from Ateneo De Manila University (Philippines) and has attended a Hotel Management Course at the Cornell University. He comes with more than 20 years of Hotel experience in various fields including Front Desk, Finance and Sales and Marketing. Martin has, over the years, accumulated more than 10 years of Food and Beverage management experience with Shangri-La Hotels and is also a Shangri-La Care I, II and III Master Trainer. He was awarded the Trainer of the Year in 2004 by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts.

In addition, Martin has had experience as both Administrator and Instructor at a University's School of HRM in Philippines.

Mr. Arthur Zhang

Program Director, Culinary Arts

Chef Arthur graduated from Beijing Shiyan College majoring in Culinary Arts. Upon graduation, he joined the China World Hotel and thereafter, has served in various Shangri-La Hotels, including Shangri-La Hotel Dalian where he did the opening for the BATS restaurant and Shangri-La Hotel Changchun. His last posting before joining the Academy was Senior Sous Chef with Shangri-La Hotel Zhongshan. Chef Arthur has accumulated more than 17 years of experience in Kitchen operations and management in all.

In March 2006, Chef Arthur joined the Academy as Program Director, Culinary Arts, with a vision to develop highly qualified and innovative talents.

Mr. Jude Medida

Program Director, Rooms (Front Office Operation, Housekeeping Operation)

Mr Jude Medida graduated from University of San Carlos with a Bachelor of Arts and completed a Certificate Program in Business Administration with Washington State University College of Business and Economics.

Jude joined the Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts in 1995 and has worked with both Shangri-La's Mactan Island Resort and Spa and Makati Shangri-La Hotel in Philippines where he acquired extensive experience in Guest Relations, Communications and Front Office Operations, as Front Office Manager. His last posting was Training Manager. He is also the Master Trainer for Shangri-La Care I, II, III and IV, and also a Certified Facilitator for "Trainer Skills" and management modules of Development Dimensions International (DDI).
